Entering Detox Mode
Oh the irony of that previous post. After I gushed about the joy of travel, I managed to sustain one of the most disappointing travel experiences of my life: I missed the opportunity to see Machu Picchu. There are details I'm still trying to figure out, but right now it looks like the LAN flight I purchased to Cusco (the small town where people start their journey to the breathtaking Inca ruins) never actually existed. It was some kind of glitch in the computer system at the moment I purchased my online ticket. LAN, the airline company, hasn't said as much, but they put up no fight when I requested a full refund for my round-trip tickets, claiming that the time had been changed for my flight and I was never notified. The interesting thing is, the LAN timetable is quite consistent. Every day in January, the latest flight to Cusco is 15:00. My flight was supposedly scheduled for 16:45. Other details just don't jive, and I'm hoping it will support my case for a full reimbursement for the costs of the tour and hotel I had booked. I'm not holding my breath, and it'll probably take a bit of a fight (they're not answering my emails so far), but I'm not going to give up without trying. After all, no reimbursement can replace the wondrous experience I missed out on because of their error.
Overall, though, this was a fabulous trip. Much needed. It had been 15 months since my passport had been inked by an immigration officer, and I think it (read: me) was feeling a little restless. Oh, it was a great trip. People think I'm an odd one for taking trips like these on my own when I don't really know the people I'll be meeting up with. But I love getting to know new people. And besides, when it's a well-oiled meeting (read: plenty of alcohol), the ability to make new friends is infinitely easier. A couple of pisco sours (the local Peruvian drink of choice) and everyone's out salsaing on the dance floor with their 20 best friends.
To give you a sense of how much alcohol was consumed, I kept a loose tally of what I drank during the week...and I was the lightweight of the group. I'll preface this by saying that everyone was safe, no one drove and no one (that I heard of) ended the nights hugging the toilet.
Here's my week in drinks:
Champagne
Champagne
Rum & Coke
Rum & Coke
Champagne
Pisco shot
Rum & Coke
Pisco shot (I think this was a half a shot...Gino knew I was nearing the end of my night)
1/2 bottle of Pilsen beer
Cusqueña beer
Champagne
Champagne
Hazelnut/coffee drink thing
Strawberry pisco sour
Maracuya sour (passion fruit-flavored pisco sour)
Maracuya sour
Maracuya sour
Cusqueña
Pisco shot (small)
Maracuya sour
Maracuya sour
Rosé wine
Rosé wine
White wine
Maracuya sour
Cusqueña
Maracuya sour
Malbec
in-flight red wine (Lima - San Salvadore)
in-flight red wine (San Salvadore - LAX)
I will repeat again: I was the light drinker of the week. All those pisco sours (well, the passion fruit-flavored pisco sours) with the white of a raw egg in each one might have been the contributor to my digestive issues at the end of the week. Oh well. The sacrifices one makes for a good time...
I have to sort through my 1,200+ pictures. Hopefully I'll post those by the weekend. To hold you over for the rest, I've provided a few previews from the New Year's Eve Party.

Literary Lushes
Went on a Literary Pub Crawl last night. We saw the places where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired to create the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, where Robert Louis Stevenson visited the man who inspired the character of Long John Silver, and the cafe where JK Rowling spent hours composing the start of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The cafe is actually a Chinese cafe, and because of the Chinese culture's attitude toward witchcraft, they don't really make it known. There's a man who stands along the Royal Mile (the tourist drag of Edinburgh) a few blocks away, holding a sign with the name of the cafe/restaurant and an arrow pointing the way. If only he'd hold a sign saying "Birthplace of Harry Potter This Way," the cafe would easily double their clientele. Pictures TK when I don't have to pay for the time to upload them.

'Tis the Season, You Know
I was going to take a nap in anticipation of making it through this evening's 11:00 Christmas Eve service, but I decided instead to pour myself a shot of Bailey's and write a religiously inspired blog post about how I do not believe in the virgin birth. But the Bailey's got the better of me; my blathering became a little too much, so I decided to spare you a long-winded explanation of why I think the Christmas story is mostly a well-intentioned literary device to draw a people into the captivating story of the life of the most influential man who has ever lived. And now my window to nap has passed.
On that note, happy Christmas to you all. I hope you have a chance to experience some of the best that this holiday has to offer.
PS - Yo tech-alicious friends! How do I work with this new label function in Blogger? How do I change where it appears and how it looks on each page? And how do I add a list of labels to the sidebar?

Vignettes of the Weekend with Sarah
Scene: SARAH and ERICA are sitting at the bar at Amsterdam with their martinis in front of them. Madonna comes on for the second time during their 10 minutes of being there.
SARAH Madonna again? What is this? A gay bar?
The girls switch on their gaydar and scan the room.
SARAH Whispering. Um, my gaydar is totally going off on the bartender. And those two guys just left with their arms around each other.
ERICA Dude, we have to call Pat right now.
-----
About 45 minutes later at the same bar after it has filled up with more and more gays and lesbians. SARAH and ERICA are deep in conversation (you know, the usual: politics, religion, boys) as OLD GAY BARTENDER comes over and scoots SARAH's chair closer to ERICA.
OGB You know, she's not going to bite.
OGB Goes back to business behind the bar.
ERICA He totally thinks we're a lesbian couple. Hee hee.
-----
Still at Amsterdam, SARAH and ERICA are now getting their nails done for $5 by two stylists—one male, one female—who work at the bar every Monday night.
GAY MANICURIST With a lilt in his voice. You know, girl, I'm not sure if I wanna drink tonight. I mean, half of me does, but the other half doesn't.
ERICA Well, then you should only drink with your left hand, not your right.
GM Ooh, girl! I like the way you think! We're totally going to be friends.
ERICA But I'm only going to be friends with the half of you that's drinking.
GM Laughs. Alright, babycakes, what color are we doing tonight?
-----
It's after midnight in ERICA's room and the two girls are in their respective beds.
ERICA Sneezing and blowing her nose. Blech.
SARAH Coughing. Uggh.
ERICA What the dynamic duo the two of us make this weekend.
-----
The same night, while discussing the finer points of Saved! before drifting off to sleep.
ERICA You know, I've decided I want a guy who is a combination of Patrick Fugit's characters in Saved! and Almost Famous. But out of high school, of course.
SARAH Oooh, yeah. Hip, but caring.
ERICA Totally hip. Knows what he believes in, but appreciates others' beliefs, too. That scene where he asks Mary out...
SARAH Oh yeah..."You're, like, totally adorable." What a cutie. But he'd definitely need to be out of high school. We'll go for the future Fugit.
-----
Walking along Mill Avenue near the ASU campus
ERICA Ahhh!!! No! Make it stop!
SARAH What?!
ERICA Points. That sign is all in Comic Sans!
ERICA pulls out camera to yet again document the travesty that is the misuse of Comic Sans font.
SARAH You know, you should start a blog like Fiscus's Learn to Spell, America and post pictures of ugly Comic Sans.
-----
SARAH and ERICA have met SARAH's cousin JODI and JODI's friend MICKEY at Casey Moore's near campus so that SARAH can play with JODI's baby PHOENIX. SARAH coos and giggles at PHOENIX.
ERICA I think between Viviane, Bandit and Phoenix, you're going to have used up your Cute Thing quotient for January, Sarah.
-----
At a gas station after leaving Casey Moore's. The girls receive a text message from PAT: "Yall driiiiinkin?"
SARAH What? Does he think we're just a pair of lushes?
She texts him back to say they're going to see Brokeback Mountain. A minute later, they receive a text from PAT in return: "You two are really gaying it up, aren't you?"
-----
At the Jade Bar in the swanky elements (too hip to capitalize) restaurant on Camelback Mountain. CUTE BARTENDER (who is definitely not gay in the girls' minds) has just filled ERICA and SARAH's martinis to the brim. CUTE BARTENDER rings up their bill while ERICA sets out the cash to pay for the martinis and reaches for her drink, which she subsequently spills on the bills. She tries to clean it up without CB noticing, but to no avail.
ERICA Hands soggy bills smelling of eggnog martini to CB Sorry about that.
CB Don't worry about it.
SARAH Fortunately, I've heard that eggnog money is still accepted in 40 states.
-----
Later that night, SARAH and ERICA are sitting on the couches at elements, half-drained martinis in hand, looking out over the dark city while trying to figure out where Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn had sat when they dined there Thanksgiving weekend.
SARAH See, this is why I need to move to Denver.
ERICA To be in a big city?
SARAH So I can spend the morning shopping at TJ MAXX and my evening drinking $14 martinis. I love it that you don't have to be dressed up or super casual all the time here.

obligatory dateline post
PORTLAND, OR - It is my last day in Portland. Having come here for my cousin Damon's wedding, it was a great chance to kill three birds with one stone, you might say: we stayed with my mom's best friend Sarah and her son, Adam, whom I hadn't seen since our sophomore year of high school; and I got to spend an entire Saturday with Scott. This afternoon, Sarah is taking us on a tour of the wine country, and of course we'll be stopping by the vineyards to do some tasting. Mom's plan is for Sarah to "pour us onto the plane, and we'll be sober when we land!"
the book
Thanks to Dan's suggestion, I stood in a line that wrapped the circumference of an entire city block for an hour and a half at Powell's City of Books (the largest independently owned bookstore in the country) to purchase Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I promptly came home and fell asleep on page 16. Horrors! I'm half-way through it now, no spoiling it for me in the comments, folks!

in pigtails
Thursday was my last day of classes. Ever. And what a day. Before heading to class, Meh-gen and I chilled on the Quad. I tried to sleep, but my mind wouldn't shut up. So instead, the two of us chatted about our plans for the Next. Whatever that Next is. She pointed out how ironic it was that I was wearing pigtails on this day marking the cusp of our adulthood. I figured it was appropriate.
on the university's tab
My only class was my capstone, Advanced Magazine Design, during which we ate cheese, brownies and Cold Stone ice cream and drank wine. (Yes, in LHH.) I went straight from there to the Senior Send-off to meet friends and tramped through the Columns. And then tramped to the Carnahan Quad for free gifts and beer from the University. Our gifts? Tips from Kaplan on how to take the GRE and info on temporary health insurance. The beer was better.
sidenote
Heard while on the Quad: "Let's go sit on the pillars." The PILLARS?!?!?! WTF?
end-of-vox
Thursday night was the end-of-semester Vox party. We were at Vivian and Reed's late into the morning, and yet still there was not as much drama as last semester's party. We're still hearing stories about Julia and Rachel.
the proof
Pictures of the aforementioned events have been added to your right. Enjoy.

a night with vox friends
So, the end-of-semester Vox staff party was scheduled for tonight. Being the loyal Friends fan I am, I requested that we have the option to have the final show on during the party. My request has turned into a drinking game, thanks to Zach.
Official Friends drinking game: Drinking soda pop, that is. Man, we're all going to be so hyper.
When Ross sounds like a wimp: drink 1
When Phoebe says something stupid: drink 1
When Chandler does something that leads viewers to question his sexuality: drink 1
When Rachel whines: drink 1
If a monkey makes an appearance: drink 15
Any sexual reference: drink 2
Any reference to a baby: drink 2
If any of the Friends kiss another Friend: bong a "cola"
When any Friend cries: drink 1
If Janice pops in: drink 1
The show is two hours long. Whew! That's a lot of pop!

i've signed my life away
Watch out Scott, you're next. I bought a cell phone today. I was going to hold out until I graduated in May, but at least four of my good friends use only their long-distance mobiles and I'm tired of the hassle of calling cards. I'd include my new number in this post, except I've seen what kind of wackos access Pat's blog and I don't want random creepy people calling me. They'd be using up precious minutes that would be better spent talking to you. So, if you'd like my new digits, zip me a quick email and we'll be in contact.
hell begins saturday
I should really change my attitude about moving back into the Alpha Chi house and starting Recruitment work week. I've just become so comfortable in my attic palace that having a roommate (wonderful person that she is - and a mag design major too!) is going to seemed cramped...not to mention that I won't be able to bring my half-drunk bottle of merlot. (I've already decided to stash a bottle of Bailey's at Sarah's and whenever I need to escape the house, I'll just head to her place.) And then there's the issues that come with Recruitment. Definitely not Greek Life at its most upstanding moment, I believe. I really truly am excited about seeing everyone again and getting to know the girls who were freshmen last year. I just wish that the unavoidable pettiness didn't have to come with it. So, starting Friday, this blog (and yours) will probably be my outlet to the real world. Relieve me, please, with stories devoid of matching toenail polish and synchronized walking. And if you want a good laugh, just cruise through Greek Town any time next week. You'll get a good show.
